Civil Service Exam (CSE) is common examination for recruitment to 24 Civil Services of Govt. of India.
It is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The notification is released tentatively by the month of February and the mode of application is online.

CSE is conducted in two phases

Preliminary examination (this phase is a mere screening test, filtering the candidates to next level)
Main Exam and Personality Assessment Test (A crucial phase which decides the service of a candidate).

  • PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION – conducted tentatively on 2nd/3rd Sunday of June / Conducted in all Districts across India.
  • The examination will comprise of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each
  • Morning session (2hrs) Paper – I
    General Studies (GS)
    Total no. of questions = 100 Each question carries 2 Marks Total Marks – 200
    Afternoon session (2hrs) Paper – II
    Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT)
    Total no. of questions = 80 Each question carries 2.5 Marks Total Marks – 200
  • Negative Marks – Penalty for wrong answers which is 1/3rd of correct mark.
  • A candidate has to get qualified in CSAT first, and then his/her selection to Main exam will be decided upon the cut off marks secured in GS.
  • The marks secured by a candidate in this examination will not be counted for merit & Final Ranking.

Main Examination

Written Examination

  • Conducted tentatively in the month of October / Conducted in all state capitals of India, for 5 days continuously.
  • It consists of 9 papers (3hrs each) for which answers can be written either in English or in any of the Indian languages chosen by the candidate while applying.

Personality Assessment Test

  • Conducted tentatively within 2 months from Main Result.
  • Interview center – Dholpur House, UPSC, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi.
Qualifying Papers
Paper A One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from 22 Languages 300 Marks
Paper B English Language 300 Marks
The evaluation of next seven papers will be carried out to only those candidates who get qualified in the above mentioned two papers with minimum qualifying marks of 25% each.
Also the marks secured by a candidate in above two papers will not be counted for merit.

Paper III General Studies – II Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations 250 Marks
Paper IV General Studies – III Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management. 250 Marks
Paper V General Studies – IV Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude 250 Marks
Optional Subject – Candidates may choose any one subject out of 48 subjects while application
Paper VI Optional Subject – Paper – 1 250 Marks
Paper VII Optional Subject – Paper – 2 250 Marks
Sub Total (Written Test) 1750 Marks
Personality Test 275 Marks
Grand Total –Written + Personality Test 2025 Marks
